Car problem, possibly electrical. having to do with pulling out the headlight knob all the way?

you need to just replace the light switch on that car,those will go bad like that and cause a major pain when they do,remove the dash bezel so you can get to it and just buy a new one for it there's no repairing that one,i own one and have dealt with this problem before,its nothing wrong with the wiring in the car,and you did right by removing the battery cable,that wil be a lot better than running the battery down on it,good luck with it.
